4 Reasons to Consume Less Sugar in 2023

New year = new horizons! For some, the calendar reset brings with it time to consider cultivating new habits (or stopping old). If you're interested in a healthier 2023, then going lighter on sugar intake may be something you'll want to consider.

I know, I know, saying goodbye to sugar can seem daunting. It's in everything from breakfast cereals to salad dressings to peanut butter. But trust me, your body will thank you for it in the long run. Here are four benefits to eating less sugar in 2023:

  1. Improved mental health: Do you ever feel like you're just a little bit more irritable or anxious after indulging in a sugary treat? That's because sugar can mess with your mood. High sugar intake has been linked to an increased risk of anxiety, depression, and other mood disorders. By cutting back on sugar, you may find yourself feeling more balanced and even-keeled.

  2. Slowed aging process: Sugar may taste sweet, but it can be really sour when it comes to aging. Consuming too much sugar can lead to the production of advanced glycation end products (AGEs), which are harmful substances that can damage cells and tissues in the body. Translation: sugar can make you look and feel older than you really are. By reducing your sugar intake, you may be able to slow down the aging process and keep those wrinkles at bay for a little bit longer.

  3. Reduced pain: High sugar intake has been linked to chronic inflammation. For those who suffer from chronic pain conditions, cutting back on sugar may help to reduce symptoms, reduce the severity, and result in lower frequency of pain experienced.

  4. Weight management: Let's be real, one of the main reasons many of us want to cut back on sugar is to manage our weight. And for good reason! Excess sugar intake can contribute to weight gain and obesity. By reducing your sugar intake, you may be able to maintain a healthy weight or even lose a few pounds.

So, if you're ready to bid farewell to sugar in the new year, go ahead and give it a try. Your body (and taste buds) will thank you for it.
